Grammy Awards 2016: Best and worst at the red carpet

Who impressed and who didn’t at the 2016 Grammy Awards red carpet? Who took home the coveted honours and stole the limelight?

The wait for the biggest night of the music calendar came to an end yesterday and as expected, it had lots of drama and emotions to offer.
As for fashion, this year too saw many dare-to-bare outfits making their way to the red carpet. hitlist picks some of the best and worst looks from the crimson rug:
Taylor Swift pulled off a colour block Atelier Versace number with panache. The Bad Blood singer oozed sexiness in a red bandeau top and hot pink skirt with a slit running all the way to the waist to reveal the matching underwear. The hairdo took the entire look a few notches up

Thumbs up
Tori Kelly
Tori Kelly

From the colour to the fit and hair, Kelly has her fashion game on point. The Gauri and Nainika gown with a full train has nothing to fault.
Ellie Goulding
Ellie Goulding

The singer was a vision in a powder pink Stella McCartney fishtail gown. We totally dig the stone-encrusted detailing at the back which uplifts the entire outfit.
James Bay
James Bay

It only takes little effort to turn around something as conventional as a tuxedo. Take a cue from singer James Bay who added his signature hat to the look and we aren’t complaining.
Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez

This Calvin Klein dreamy midnight blue shimmery gown with cut-outs on the side is arresting, to say the least. Keeping the look simple with smoky eyes and a pair of hoops was a great idea. Way to go, Gomez!
Thumbs down
Z Lala

When we see an outfit like this, we wonder what she was thinking. This skin-baring mesh number is simply awful. It looks like she can’t move because of all the wires wrapped around her.
Jacqueline Van Bierk
Jacqueline Van Bierk

We think Jacqueline mistook the Grammys for Halloween. This vamp-like sheer bodysuit number coupled with red hair and neon pink platforms is an absolute disaster.
Dencia

One understands the need to get noticed on the red carpet, but turning up in an outfit like this to achieve it is questionable. This pink jumpsuit embellished with Hello Kitty dolls, angel wings and crosses makes us cringe.
Andra Day
Andra Day

If the ill-fitted green mermaid tail gown wasn’t enough, the songstress paired it with a fur stole and fur sandals. Also, the attempt at a vintage hairdo was so uninspiring.
Joy Villa
Joy Villa

She is known for her wild fashion choices and this one was no exception. The barely-there outfit looked like an extended rib cage and the tulle headgear was unflattering.
Standout moments
1. In her acceptance speech, Swift reportedly made a reference to Kanye West, advising women to ignore those who would try to "take credit for your fame".
2. Justin Bieber won his first Grammy and celebrated the win with a medley performance alongside Skrillex and Diplo. He also brought along his little brother Jaxon on the red carpet and they looked adorable together.
3. Lady Gaga paid tribute to the late David Bowie with a splashy montage of his biggest hits, including Let's Dance and Heroes. The tributes continued with surviving members of the Eagles taking the stage with Jackson Browne to pay their respects to the late Glenn Frey with a rendition of Take it Easy.
4. Gwen Stefani, too, paid a heartwarming special tribute to Blake Shelton.
5. Rihanna cancelled at the last minute. Apparently, she had been put on "vocal rest" by her doctor. Lauryn Hill, too, was a no-show as she claimed that the Grammys had announced her participation without her consent.
Big wins
1. Taylor Swift won the Grammy for Album of the Year for her blockbuster 1989. She also won awards for Best Pop Vocal Album for 1989 and Best Music Video for her song, Bad Blood.
2. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk was another big winner, grabbing the prestigious Record of the Year as well as Best Pop Group/Duo Performance.
3. Kendrick Lamar, who went into the awards with 11 nominations, won five, including best rap album Grammy for his critically acclaimed To Pimp A Butterfly.

However, even before the video can be unveiled, the two actors have been locked in a rather amusing fight — over Bhushan’s Ferrari! He had promised to gift his Ferrari 458 Italia Spider to whoever impresses him more in the music video.
Now that the video is ready to be out, their fight has hot up. They both want to lay their hands on the luxury sports car.

A source told People magazine that while the reality star and mum-of-two is a "very supportive wife" and "rarely complains", she "can't stand" his odd outbursts.
They said: "What causes friction in the marriage, however, is Kanye's compulsive tweeting. Kim can't stand it. She is all for self-promotion, but doesn't approve of Twitter drama.
"The source said the 35-year-old was particularly upset with her hubby when he took aim at Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose. Kanye West gets 'out-bragged' on Twitter as fans ridicule rapper for 'furs and houses' tweet. Kanye launched into a furious rant where he even brought the pair's two-year-old son into it, saying: "You wouldn't have a child if it wasn't for me."
Amber and Kim later met up, with a source telling People at the time: "Kim is a mum and wants to be a role model. She doesn't want to be involved in ridiculous drama.
"Then came the Taylor Swift lyric drama where he raps on song Famous: "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that bitch famous." Though the source added that Kim isn't fazed by his song lyrics.
However, Taylor definitely was and hit back at the rapper at the Grammy Awards on Monday night as she collected her prize for Best Album. Taylor told the audience: "As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice I want to say to all the young women out there: there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. Taylor Swift Looks Fierce Alongside Selena Gomez"
But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people side track you, someday when you get to where you're going; you'll look around and you'll know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment." Mirror Celebs has contacted reps for Kanye and Kim for comment.

Chiwetel Ejiofor: Being gay is harder than being black in Hollywood

Los Angeles: '12 Years a Slave' star Chiwetel Ejiofor believes Hollywood still marginalises people because of their sexuality.

Chiwetel Ejiofor
Chiwetel Ejiofor
The industry has been accused of a lack of diversity following the 2016 Academy Awards nominations, where no African-American actor or director was nominated for a top honour for the second year in a row, but the actor "believes it's harder for someone to succeed if they're homosexual than if they're black.
"I hope this changes (but) I think it's probably harder to be gay," he said.
"I think sexuality is still marginalised in a way that is pretty open. I think it's tough. I think for one's own piece of mind, for one's own sense of self and psychological health, I feel like that's the horrible thing about 'don't ask, don't tell'... Because it produces a sense of shame, and therefore this sense of being 'less than', you know? And I hate that. I hate that for anybody."
But Ejiofor, 38, argues that at the same time, a person's sexuality isn't anyone else's business, and if the individual wants to, they should be able to declare their preference without fear of it affecting their opportunities in life in any way.
"If I hadn't had the opportunities and the fortune that I have had, of course I would have a very different perspective to that, but I can't be completely intellectually dishonest about what has happened in my life... It's a tiny bit more nuanced for me to talk about," he explained.

Gwen Stefani records music video live during Grammys

Los Angeles: Singer Gwen Stefani made history by recording her music video for a new song "Make me like you" during a Grammys commercial break.

The No Doubt frontwoman teamed up with Target for it. In the Sophie Muller-directed live video, Stefani struts her stuff in a salon, rides on a scooter and rollerblades with friends, reports usmagazine.com.
The new single was released on February 12, and the lyrics are pretty seem to be about her boyfriend Blake Shelton.
The song, penned by the 46-year-old herself, includes the lines, "I was fine before I met you/ I was broken but fine/ I was lost and uncertain/ But my heart was still mine … Now you're all I see".
In the video, Shelton also gets a discreet shoutout. During one scene, the bar appears to be named "Blake's" after the country crooner.
The two first stepped out together over Halloween weekend, following their respective divorces. In November, Stefani's representative confirmed that they're dating.

Adele dresses son as Anna from 'Frozen'

The singer was also joined by partner Simon Konecki as she explored the amusement park with their son.
The singer, who welcomed the boy in October 2012, treated him to a fun-filled day at Disneyland in Anaheim, California over the weekend, reports mirror.co.uk.
Adele had seemingly gone all out to make it a day the three-year-old wouldn't forget as she treated him to plenty of goodies.
Pushing his pram around the park, she rested heaps of bags on the back of the stroller after going wild in the giftshops.
Just one of the many presents that she'd splashed out for was a mini replica of Anna's dress from 'Frozen'.

It appeared little Angelo couldn't wait to get home to wear it and instead popped it on as he was pushed around the park.

Coldplay bring out Beyonce at Super Bowl Queen Bey, 34, has conveniently left space in her tour schedule that coincides with the weekend music event and will be heading to the UK anyway for the first night of the European leg in Sunderland on the following Tuesday.
Bey headlined Glasto in 2010, so she knows the ropes and understands what a huge deal it is in the UK.
Plus she has a song out with the lads, Hymn For The Weekend.Beyonce raves to Formation at Super Bowl after party.  Our source says: "Given the stupendous reaction fans had to Beyonce during Coldplay's Super Bowl stint earlier this month, it's a no-brainer for Chris Martin to try to get her involved again - it would be a great start for the UK leg of her tour, too.

"Meanwhile, even though Jay Z already put a ring on it, Beyonce wowed at the Grammys in an actual wedding dress from Dior.

Grammys pay tribute to Rene Angelil

During its annual 'In Memorial' reel, the Grammys decided to honour the late music manager by playing Dion's love ballad "My heart will go on" on Monday night here, reports people.com.
The Grammys' memorial segment was just the latest commemoration of Angélil, who died last month at the age of 73 after a year's long battle with cancer.
A week after his death, Angélil's family, friends and fans gathered in Montreal, where he was honoured at a public visitation and national funeral. Then, on February 3, his life was celebrated at a memorial service in Las Vegas.

Grammys criticised for not paying tribute to Natalie Cole

Los Angeles: Natalie Cole's name was mentioned during the In Memoriam segment at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards but she was not given a special tribute. The improper tribute to the late singer has not only disappointed her family but also fans.

Unlike David Bowie, Maurice White, Glenn Frey and Lionel Richie, who were each celebrated with their own musical tributes during the awards show on Monday, Natalie, daughter of Nat King Cole, wasn't honoured with a tribute, reports aceshowbiz.com.
"Sadly a forgettable tribute to Natalie Cole," Natalie's sisters, Timolin and Casey, told Entertainment Tonight.
"Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister.
"Here is a woman who has been in the business for four decades, had 21 Grammy nominations and won nine Grammys. She deserves more than (to be a part of) a minute-and-a-half tribute," Natalie's son Robert Adam Yancy said.
"It was shameless the way they minimised her legacy. We will find solace in her legacy as well as her endless fans around the world," he added.
Celebrities like Holly Robinson Peete and Eric Benet also expressed their disappointment over the matter.
"We lost so many greats but Natalie Cole first African American to win Best New Artist deserved a tribute #Grammys #BHM," Peete tweeted.
Meanwhile, Benet uploaded a video on Facebook ahead of the ceremony. In the video, he questioned Grammys' decision not to honour Natalie's contribution while also blaming the awards show for discriminating black music.
"Didn't even talk about Natalie, such a powerhouse of pop, jazz, soul, Grammy artist and no tribute to Natalie Cole. So Grammys, shame on you, shame on you, shame on you," Benet said.

Taylor Swift takes dig at Kanye West at Grammys

Taylor Swift responded to Kanye West' s controversial lyric about her as she picked up the award for Best Album at the Grammy Awards 2016.

The singer, who is the first woman to win the award twice, shocked viewers as she referred to his song in her acceptance speech. Kanye's song Famous, which was unveiled last week, features the lyric "I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b**ch famous."
In response to the comment, which has been labelled misogynistic, an emotional Taylor told the audience: "As the first woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys twice I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people side track you, someday when you get to where you're goin, you'll look around and you'll know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment."
Taylor was praised for her speech by many of the viewers, with one writing: "I am so proud of @taylorswift13 for that acceptance speech."
But others thought she was letting Kanye win by speaking about him during her speech: "Taylor Swift wasted her album of the year speech to throw a shot a Kanye. Kanye wins again."
Tori Kelly, who was watching the show, was caught looking very shocked as Taylor spoke - perhaps concerned how Kanye would respond this time.
Last week Kanye tried to deny that he was being disrespectful about Taylor with his song, tweeting: "I did not diss Taylor Swift and I've never dissed her… First thing is I'm an artist and as an artist I will express how I feel with no censorship. I asked my wife for her blessings and she was cool with it," he said referring to Kim.
He then claimed it was Swift herself who inspired the line. Kanye continued: "I called Taylor and had a hour long convo with her about the line and she thought it was funny and gave her blessings. B**** is an endearing term in hip hop like the word N****."
"I'm not even going to take credit for the idea… it's actually something Taylor came up with… She was having dinner with one of our friends whose name I will keep out of this and she told him. I can't be mad at Kanye because he made me famous! #FACT."
While the rapper might have given his side of the story, according to reps for Swift, she advised him against the lyrics.
"She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message," her rep said.

The All About That Bass singer sobbed her way through her acceptance speech, repeatedly saying: "I'm a mess!". Meghan, 22, started crying as soon as she stepped on stage after being handed the prize by previous winner Sam Smith.
"I have to thank L.A. Reid for looking at me like an artist instead of just a songwriter," she said, before a camera cut to her proud dad also wailing in the audience." And my mum and dad, for always believing in me," she continued.
"I'm a mess. I have to cry!" Her dad, Gary, was her date for the night and looked suitably proud of his girl's achievements.
Meghan beat off stiff competition from Sam Hunt, James Bay, Tori Kelly and Courtney Barnett in the category. She later wrote on Twitter: "Just balling my eyes out. "The Lips Are Movin' singer later explained why she was so emotional on stage.
Alongside a picture of her picking up the gong, she wrote on Instagram: "This is me forever..balling my eyes out. Can't believe what happened. My dad whispered "you made it" before I walked up and I lost it." I love my family so much. Without them I wouldn't be here today. Thank you to my team and everyone who got me here. Gonna cry happy tears all night. AHHHHHH! "
Meghan also joined stars including John Legend and Demi Lovato for a musical tribute to Lionel Richie as part of tonight's glittering celebrations.
